How to Tell Centipedes & Millipedes Apart Indoors

Centipedes and millipedes are arthropods, not insects. Both have segmented bodies and numerous legs, but their movement and defensive behavior make them relatively easy to distinguish.

Look for these identifying characteristics:

Centipedes: They have one pair of legs per body segment, move rapidly, and don’t coil when disturbed.
Millipedes: They have two pairs of legs per body segment, move slowly, and typically curl up when disturbed.

House centipedes can reproduce indoors and are commonly associated with damp areas. They prey on other household insects, rarely bite, and are seldom dangerous. Neither centipedes nor millipedes are known to carry diseases affecting people, animals, or plants, and millipedes don’t damage a home’s structure.

An occasional sighting doesn’t always require treatment. Repeated sightings, activity in several rooms, or concentrations in damp spaces may warrant an inspection to identify the conditions allowing them to remain indoors.
