Boxelder Bug Behavior in Central New York

Boxelder bugs (Boisea trivittata), also called box elder beetles, are about half an inch long with black bodies and orange or red markings, including three red stripes on the thorax just behind the head. Nymphs are bright red. They spend the summer feeding on the seeds and leaves of boxelder (Acer negundo), maple, and ash trees and typically go unnoticed until late summer, when their behavior shifts dramatically.

As temperatures cool, adults leave host trees and move toward structures, drawn to heat radiating from south- and west-facing exterior walls. They congregate in large numbers on siding, window frames, and trim before pushing inside through:

Attic and soffit vents
Utility line penetrations
Openings under siding and shingles

Once inside wall voids and attics, boxelder bugs remain largely dormant through winter. On warm days, though, they can become active and find their way into living spaces. Fall population size varies year to year; hot, dry summers tend to produce larger migrations. Only fully grown adults survive overwintering.
